Who This Is For

Depression is a health condition, and it does not always look the way people expect. You might recognize some of this:

  • Getting through the day takes more than it used to, and you can't say why.
  • Things you used to enjoy don't do much for you now.
  • You are sleeping too much or hardly at all.
  • You have tried to push through, and you are tired of pushing.

What We Pay Attention To

A good plan depends on understanding your depression, in your life, at this time.

How Long and How Much

When it started, whether it has come and gone before, and how it is affecting your work and home.

What Has Been Tried

Earlier treatment and medications, what helped, what did not, and what you would rather not repeat.

Stage of Life

Depression after a baby and depression at 80 are different conversations, and I work with new mothers and seniors.

Your Overall Wellness

Sleep, appetite, health conditions and support, all of which bear on your brain health.

A Word About Hope and Honesty

At Dakota Psychiatric Care, I believe healing begins with compassion, and every person deserves to feel seen, heard and supported.

I also won't promise you a date when you will feel better. Treatment works differently for different people, and sometimes the first plan needs changing. That is why follow-up matters as much as the first visit.

What Care Looks Like

You set the pace on the things you get to decide, including how you feel about medication.

  1. 1

    Initial Evaluation

60 to 90 minutes on your concerns, your history and what you want from care.

  2. 2

    A Shared Plan

A personalized plan that may include medication management and supportive interventions such as CBT and DBT skills.

  3. 3

    Regular Follow-Up

30 to 45 minutes to see what has changed, address side effects and adjust the plan.

Questions About Depression Care

How do I know if this is depression or just a hard time?

Sorting that out is part of what the evaluation is for.

I've tried medication before and it didn't help. Is there a point in coming?

Yes, and that history is useful. Tell me what you tried and how it went, and we can decide what makes sense now.

What if I am having thoughts of suicide?

Call or text 988 or call 911 now. This practice is not an emergency service, and you should not wait for an appointment.
