Not Sad, Just Worn Out

Depression doesn't always feel like sadness. It can show up as being tired all the time, feeling flat instead of low, and getting through each day with nothing in reserve. You may sleep and still wake up drained, or finish work with nothing left for the people and things you care about.

It is easy to explain this away as a busy season, a run of bad sleep or just getting older. Tiredness can come from more than one place, and I won't guess at the cause from a web page. The evaluation is where we look at it carefully, with the rest of your life in view.

  • You sleep, but you wake up tired.
  • Small tasks feel like they take everything you have.
  • You feel flat more than sad.
  • You keep telling yourself you just need a break.

Looking Past the Tiredness

Low energy can be tangled up with several parts of your life, so the evaluation looks at each one.

How You Sleep and Wake

Sleeping a lot or very little, waking up as tired as when you went to bed, and how your nights have changed lately.

Appetite and Energy

Eating more or less than usual, and how much energy you have for ordinary parts of the day, like cooking, errands or returning a call.

Health Conditions

Ongoing conditions and recent changes in your body that bear on how you feel, so we see the whole picture rather than one symptom.

Support and What You Carry

Who helps you, what you are carrying at work and at home, and whether real rest is even possible right now.

What We Work Toward

I can't tell you how long it will take before you feel more like yourself, and I won't guess. What we work toward is a clear picture of what is going on, a plan you helped shape, and steady attention to sleep, appetite and the rest of your overall wellness.

If you have been pushing through for a long time, wanting something to change is reasonable. We review how things are going at each follow-up session and change course when the plan isn't fitting.

Questions About Depression and Exhaustion

I don't feel sad. Can it still be depression?

It can be. Depression can show up as tiredness, flatness or lost interest rather than sadness, and the evaluation helps us understand what is going on for you.

What if I'm too drained to make the drive?

Telehealth is an option for the evaluation in North Dakota and Iowa, from a private spot where you can talk freely. Evening appointments are available on request.

What if I have thoughts of harming myself?
