What a telehealth visit is like, step by step

The practical side of seeing me by video, from finding a private spot to how the evaluation goes.

If You Have Never Done This Before

A telehealth appointment is a real appointment with me, held by video instead of in the office. If you have never had one, it is fair to wonder what you need, where to sit and whether it will feel odd to talk about something personal through a screen.

This guide keeps to the practical side, in plain terms: where you need to be, what to have ready and how the visit unfolds. If it leaves a question open, you can ask it during the free 15-minute phone consult before you book an evaluation.

What You Need

There are four things to have in place before the visit.

Being in North Dakota or Iowa

Telehealth with my practice is available in these two states only, so you need to be in one of them for the appointment.

A Private Spot

Somewhere you can talk freely without being overheard, such as a room with a door you can close. Privacy matters far more than a tidy background.

A Camera and a Steady Connection

A device with a camera, and a connection steady enough to hold a video conversation for the whole appointment.

Time Set Aside

The initial evaluation runs 60 to 90 minutes. Give yourself the full window, so you aren't rushing off to the next thing when we finish.

How the Visit Goes

From booking to the end of the evaluation, in order.

  1. 1

Book as You Would Any Visit

Use the contact form, call the practice or book a session online through the Contact page. The free 15-minute phone consult can come first if you have questions.

  2. 2

Settle In a Few Minutes Early

Find your private spot, get comfortable, and keep any notes or questions you want to ask close at hand.

  3. 3

    Talk It Through Together

We cover what brought you in, your history, your life right now and what you want from care. You can pause, ask why I am asking, or leave a topic for another day.

What Stays the Same

A telehealth evaluation covers the same ground as one at the Minot office, and it is with me either way, since this is a solo practice. You don't need the right vocabulary or a neat summary of your history before we start.

By the end, we have a plan you had a hand in making, built around your history and what you want care to look like. I can't tell you how quickly anything will change, but you should come away with a clearer picture of what may be going on.

Questions About Telehealth Visits

Does the private spot have to be at home?

What matters is that you can speak freely without being overheard, and that you are in North Dakota or Iowa during the appointment.

What if I'm not comfortable on camera?

That is worth saying during the free 15-minute phone consult. The Minot office is there if you would rather sit across from me in person.

Does a telehealth evaluation cover as much as an office visit?

It covers the same ground over the same 60 to 90 minutes. You can still ask questions, take a pause and shape the plan with me.

Fees in Brief

The initial evaluation is $300 whichever way you are seen, by telehealth or at the Minot office. The 15-minute phone consult is free.
